The exhibition, a benefit for the National Scholastic Chess Foundation, ran through November 25th, and some dozen paintings and sculptures were sold, including Tobey's Bishop Takes Rook, shown below on the poster for the show. 30% of all revenue from sales went to the NSCF.
Tobey's work was reviewed by Cornelia Seckel, Editor of Art Times, who described David's work as "mesmerizing -- so much movement and color". Ed McCormack, in his full page review of the show in Gallery & Studio magazine, wrote about Tobey's sculpture as "surpassing even that of [Julio] Gonzales," & his paintings as "continuing to evolve at a pace with his native talent".
The Gallery & Studio review in its entirety can be seen on the 11/06 exhibition's review page, and Tobey's latest artist's statement can be found in his media release about the show.

the painting auctioned to benefit the Chess Foudation.
"Chess masters strategize to formulate a dynamic approach to the game while creating concealed patterns and relationships within. The painting 'Bishop Takes Rook' was created to emulate this model.
"By means of a multi-layered abstraction process, chess pieces have been integrated and hidden within the painting’s greater design. A sense of intuition and balance encompasses this piece to affect a comprehensive relationship between the arts of chess and painting."
-- David Tobey
Along with the paintings and sculpture, there was wine, snacks and guitar music by Michael Wengler, who appears every Saturday with his acoustic guitar duo at Talias Steakhouse, 668 Amsterdam Avenue(at 92nd Street), from 9:30 p.m. to closing with folk, blues and rock music.
In May '06, The Contemporary Artists Guild selected two of David Tobey's works of art to be included in their annual invitational group exhibition at New York's Broome Street Gallery -- his acrylic painting "Passage" and his welded metal sculpture "Conductor".
A series of future exhibitions and events are planned in New York City and Westchester. If you would like to be informed about these and/or receive invitations, please just send us an email.
